Implants, a paradigm shift in treatment planning

Dental implants have been widely utilizing data regarding their outcomes. In recent years, however, peri-implantitis has been defined as a complication.

We will present what takes place around implants with peri-implantitis, and discuss its prevalence and its risk factors. We will compare it to periodontitis and discuss whether or not peri-implantitis is a more severe disease than periodontitis. Based on the available scientific background, we will propose a paradigm shift in the treatment plan of certain implant cases.

Major topics to be addressed:

Peri-implantitis
Histo-pathology of peri-implantitis
Prevalence of peri-implantitis
Risk factors of peri-implantitis
Peri-implantitis vs periodontitis
Paradigm shift in the treatment planning of implants

Learning Objectives:
  1. Comprehending peri-implant tissue hysterectomy-pathology during peri-implantitis
  2. Understanding the risk factors for peri-implantitis
  3. Understanding how peri-implantitis compares to periodontitis

Bio:

After completing my dental education in Montpellier, France in 1993, I specialized in Prosthodontics at the University of Southern California in 1997, under Drs. Chee and Dr. Donovan.

I practiced from 1997 to 2018 as a prosthodontist, performing all my surgical procedures such as implant placements, pre-prosthetic periodontal surgery, and other elective periodontal procedures.

From 2004 to 2016, I completed a Ph.D. at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden in the department of Periodontology under Drs. BERGLUNDH, ABRAHAMSSON and LINDHE. The topic of this work was ‘Experimental peri-implantitis: Spontaneous progression, treatment.’

I also performed other experiments focusing on the comparison between experimental periodontitis and peri-implantitis.

These studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Clinical Periodontology and have been cited in peer-review journals more than 1000 times in peer-reviewed publications.

I have presented my work at national and international venues, such as the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry the European Academy for Osseointegration, Europerio, and numerous other.

At the moment, I am a full-time faculty in the Department of Comprehensive Oral Health, Prosthodontics, at the School of Dentistry, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

I also practice at the faculty practice of the School.
