“Periapical Host Responses to Infections”

Infections of the dental pulp involve a complex gram negative, anaerobic bacterial flora.  These infections destroy pulp tissues and persist within the root canal space, from where they subsequently elicit immune responses in the periapical region.  In this lecture we will review the innate and adaptive immune responses that localize pulpal infections and prevent infection dissemination, as well as those responses that mediate local tissue and bone destruction.

Attendees will learn:
1. Innate and adaptive immune responses to pulpal infections.
2. Immune mechanisms that prevent the dissemination of infections from the root canal, to regional and/or distant sites.
3. Immune and inflammatory responses that result in local tissue and bone destruction by osteoclasts.
