"Do clinical guidelines cause controversies in dentistry?"

During our training as dental students we rely on our clinical faculty to guide us. We trust their clinical judgement and do not question their technical skills nor their theoretical knowledge. However, after entering private practice we must access and use new and pertinent clinical guidelines from other sources. These sources could be lectures delivered at continuing education courses or our own analysis of the literature. This presentation will highlight how guidelines can be appraised and why many published guidelines may unfortunately sometimes create more controversies than help.

Topics:
  1. Generation of clinical practice guidelines.
  2. Examples of clinical practice guidelines in dentistry.
  3. Appraisal of clinical practice guidelines.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the process for generating clinical practice guidelines.
  2. Understand how to appraise existing clinical practice guidelines.
  3. Understand how to implement clinical practice guideline to benefit all patients.
