Title: Update on Oral and Intravenous Bisphosphonates and Osteonecrosis of the Jaws

Abstract: Since Drs. Robert E. Marx and  Salvatore L. Ruggiero first showed a link between oral and intravenous bisphosphonates and osteonecrosis of the jaws the dental profession has become acutely aware of the dilemma this family of drugs presents daily in treatment planning for our patients. This presentation will focus on the most current literature and information on etiology, risk assessment, diagnosis and prevention of bisphosphonate induced osteonecrosis of the jaws.

Objectives:

1) Understand the affect of bisphosphonates on the osteoclast and its function in normal bone homeostasis.

2) Evaluate present risk assessment tools and their importance in prevention of bisphosphonate induced osteonecrosis of the jaws.

3) Develop a working understanding of the comorbidities both medical and dental that precipitate bisphosphonate induced osteonecrosis of the jaws.
